A Sustainable, Resilient, and Healthier Syracuse

Under my administration, Syracuse will lead the way in green infrastructure and urban farming, creating a healthier, more sustainable, and economically vibrant city. Climate change is a reality that affects every neighborhood, and we must take bold, proactive steps to adapt and thrive. By leveraging federal, state, and local partnerships, we will build a resilient Syracuse that prioritizes environmental responsibility, job creation, and economic opportunity.

Urban farming and sustainability initiatives will not only address climate change and food insecurity but also create jobs, improve public health, and enhance community stability. Through strategic investment and collaboration, we will make Syracuse a national leader in green urban development.

I. Green Infrastructure: A Smarter, Greener Syracuse

 

My administration will implement sustainable infrastructure policies to improve environmental resilience, reduce emissions, and create green jobs.

 

1. Renewable & Efficient Energy Solutions

• Convert municipal buildings to geothermal and solar energy, joining a community energy grid that reduces costs and carbon emissions.

• Expand solar and renewable energy programs to support residential and business participation in clean energy initiatives.

• Promote green workforce development by training local workers for green energy installation and maintenance jobs.

 

2. Sustainable Transportation & Public Infrastructure

• Transition of city vehicles to electric and expand public-private partnerships for EV charging stations across the city.

• Enhance public transit systems to include more eco-friendly and efficient transportation options.

3. Waste Reduction & Recycling Initiatives

• Phase out plastic garbage bags and implement biodegradable alternatives to reduce environmental waste.

• Develop stronger recycling policies and support local businesses in adopting sustainable packaging.

• Encourage community composting programs to minimize landfill waste and support urban farming.

 

4. Climate Resilience & Flood Mitigation

• Dredge creeks and tunnels to improve water flow and reduce flooding risks caused by rising temperatures.

• Partner with DEC and Onondaga County to expand stormwater management projects and protect neighborhoods from climate-related disasters.

• Expand tree planting initiatives to combat heat, improve air quality, and reduce stormwater runoff.

 

II. Urban Farming: Strengthening Syracuse Through Sustainable Agriculture

 

Urban farming is not just about food production—it is about economic empowerment, public health, and community resilience.

 

1. Expanding Food Security & Public Health Initiatives

• Develop urban farming sites across Syracuse to provide fresh, local food to underserved neighborhoods.

• Support community gardens and urban agriculture projects to improve access to healthy foods and reduce food deserts.

 

2. Job Creation & Workforce Development

• Establish training programs to prepare workers for careers in urban agriculture, food production, and sustainability sectors.

• Expand partnerships with local schools and workforce agencies to connect residents with green job opportunities.

 

3. Education & Modern Farming Technology

• Integrate urban farming into STEM education by working with schools, colleges, and community organizations.

• Introduce modern farming technologies, including hydroponics and vertical farming, to maximize space and efficiency in urban agriculture.

 

4. Crime Prevention & Community Engagement

• Use urban farming as a tool for youth engagement, providing positive opportunities and mentorship to reduce crime.

• Promote green spaces to foster stronger community bonds and safer neighborhoods.

5. Addressing Homelessness & Mental Health Through Farming Therapy

• Expand therapeutic urban farming programs to help individuals struggling with mental health challenges.

• Provide job training and workforce reintegration for homeless individuals through community farming initiatives.

• Work with shelters and social service agencies to develop urban agriculture programs that promote stability and healing.

 

III. Policy Implementation & Accountability

 

To ensure effective execution of these initiatives, my administration will:

• Create a Green Infrastructure & Urban Farming Task Force to oversee policy implementation and secure funding opportunities.

• Leverage federal, state, and private funding to expand sustainability projects and support local farmers and businesses.

• Establish measurable sustainability benchmarks to track progress and ensure transparency in our green initiatives.
